A representative from the Canyon Lake Gorge Preservation Society will give us a presentation about this rare “instant” formation.  In 2002, heavy rains caused severe flooding and extensive damage in this area of the Hill Country. A torrent of water from a bloated Canyon Lake sliced open the earth, exposing rock formations, fossils and even dinosaur footprints. In only three days the raging water uncovered what would normally take nature millions of years to unearth. To protect the newly formed gorge from vandals, it was open only to researchers until 2007 when the Guadalupe Blanco River Authority opened it for tours.  During the five years it was closed to the public, preservationists, geology professors, and anthropologists preserved and cataloged their findings.
